Five local utilities have signed agreements to build a second electric generating unit on the site of the existing Big Stone Plant near Milbank, South Dakota. Construction of the plant still is contingent on the approval of all necessary permits. If built, Big Stone II will come online in mid-2013 and serve the investing utilities' customer loads. Big Stone II will be approximately 500-580 megawatts, coal-based, and designed with the best available emission-control technology as prescribed by EPA requirements.
